Mike's Bikes

Northern California

Our mission is simple: Get more people on bikes. Mike's Bikes was founded in 1964 as one of Marin County's very first Schwinn shops. In fact, it is rumored that our original store in San Rafael was home to some of the first mountain bikes in existence. Cycling has changed dramatically as the decades have rolled by, but Mike's Bikes has never wavered from our total dedication to the sport. Now with eleven stores, we're the largest local bike shop on the West Coast. Our focus is on delivering the best product in the industry to our customers. We live to create cyclists.

What attracted you to the bicycle industry?

Where else can you make a good living promoting a product that you believe so much in? We can’t imagine doing anything else.

What sets your shop apart?

We’ve developed a unique brand of first class customer service, and we deliver on our promise of a great experience. These things, coupled with the resources we enjoy as a larger chain, are an unbeatable combination.

What’s your specialty?

It's funny to say it this way, but our specialty is having the broadest possible appeal. We stock a full range of bikes that go from 5-figure limited production machines all the way down to kid's bikes, and our employees' expertise and no-attitude approach to customer service works to pair each and every one with the perfect rider.

What’s hot right now? What are your customers asking for the most?

The 29er mountain bike is an obvious choice. They continue to sweep the industry and are in general a perfect fit for the trails in our back yard of Northern California.

Who is the longest serving member of your staff?

A core group of loyalists has been growing with us since day 1, almost 15 years.

Who is your favorite customer and why?

The most important person in the company is the next person through our door.

What are your aspirations for the future?

We’ve developed a consistent formula that works very well and resonates with our customers. We intend to continue delivering great experiences to more people and more markets.

What part of the business are you most proud of?

Our sister company, BikeSmart, delivers a great range of shop-tested, employee-approved parts and accessories that are unique to our market and have a very positive impact on our bottom line.

Are you involved in Advocacy?

If so, what organizations do you support? We support a wide variety of local advocacy orgs, charity rides, race teams and leagues, etc. And our primary philanthropy vehicle is The Mike’s Bikes Foundation, through which we build, support, train and supply a network of independently owned bike shops on Southern Africa. Our customers have donated over 6000 used bikes, which we use as seed capital for these Sister Shops. See MikesBikesAfrica.com for more details.

What's the best thing about working in the bicycle industry?

The bike business is still very entrepreneurial and always changing. It’s an exciting industry because, at the retail level anyway, there are very few entrenched players, and there’s tons of opportunity. That makes for a dynamic environment that keeps us on our toes.

What clubs or teams do you sponsor?

While we support a variety of local and regional teams and clubs, Team Mike’s Bikes is our primary focus. In only its second year of existence, Team MB has established itself as the fastest and most talked about CAT1-2 road team in Northern California.

Do you have a favorite pro bike racer?

The legendary Ned Overend was kind enough to lead an intimate group ride with our employees and customers earlier this year. We're still smiling from that experience.
